福山雅治×石田ゆり子が挑む
歌手で俳優の福山雅治が、来秋公開予定の映画『マチネの終わりに』で主演を務め、女優・石田ゆり子との本格ラブストーリーに挑むことがわかった。2人はCMやバラエティ番組での共演はあるものの、俳優としては本作で初共演となる。物語は、クラシックギタリストの蒔野聡史 (福山雅治)と、海外の通信社に勤務する小峰洋子(石田ゆり子)の出会いから始まる。ともに40代という、独特で繊細な年齢をむかえていた2人は、初めて出会った時から強く惹かれ合っていた。しかし、洋子には婚約者がいた。世界を飛び回る仕事柄、そして時代という大きな波に翻弄され、蒔野と洋子の間にはすれ違いや思わぬ障害が生じ、ついに2人の関係は途絶えてしまう。互いへの想いを心の底にしまったまま、別々の道を歩む2人の運命が再び交わる日はくるのか…。
原作となる小説「マチネの終わりに」は、芥川賞作家・平野啓一郎が16年に刊行し、渡辺淳一文学賞を受賞した大人の恋愛小説。日本・パリ・ニューヨークを舞台に、40代の男女2人が6年間にたった3度の出会いの中で悩みながらも愛し合っていく様子が描かれ、純文学としては異例の17万部を突破した。幾多の小説を発表してきた平野啓一郎だが、映像化に関しては今作が初となる。
主人公の蒔野聡史を演じるのは、歌手としても俳優としても第一線で活躍する福山雅治。映画化にあたって「信頼する西谷監督の元で、深く原作に引き寄せられ、まさに洋子そのものが身体に宿っておられるであろう石田さんと、蒔野聡史として向き合えるよう頑張ります」と語る福山は、天才ギタリストとして名を馳せるも、現状の演奏に満足が出来ずに自分の音楽を見失って苦悩する繊細な役を演じる。
そして、フランスの通信社に所属のジャーナリスト・小峰洋子には、TVドラマ「逃げるは恥だが役に立つ」(16)など話題作に出演の女優・石田ゆり子。婚約者がいながらも叶わぬ恋に翻弄される女性ジャーナリストを演じる石田は「この役を演じることに背筋が伸びる想いです」と意気込み、「緊張もしますがクランクインが楽しみでなりません」と撮影を心待ちに。海外が舞台となる本作では、英語やフランス語での演技も披露されるそう。
また、本作で監督を務めるのは、福山雅治主演の「ガリレオ」シリーズや『昼顔』(17)などで知られる西谷弘。主人公がギタリストであることに絡めて「初共演の2人がどんなハーモニーを奏でるのか。まるで指揮者のような想いで今から心躍らせています」とコメントし、原作者の平野も「僕の小説は映画化が難しく、これまで実現したことがなかったので、とても楽しみにしています」と、期待をあらわにした。

「それでも、人は人を愛さずには生きていけない」。長く余韻が残る読後感でした。恋愛する、恋愛しないに関わらず、どんな生き方も許容する現代において、「愛」とはどのような意味を持つのか？人が人を必要とするその時に名付けられる「愛」という感情。目には見えない無形の感情を、今作は可視化出来るのではないかと感じています。信頼する西谷監督の元で、深く原作に引き寄せられ、まさに洋子そのものが身体に宿っておられるであろう石田さんと、蒔野聡史として向き合えるよう頑張ります。

こんなふうに人を愛せたら…そんな気持ちで一気に読み終えた「マチネの終わりに」の映画化に参加できることに心震える想いです。初めてご一緒する西谷監督のもと、そして初共演の福山雅治さんと共に、この素晴らしい物語の中に生きることはこの上ない喜びです。私の演じる小峰洋子という女性は、人としても女性としてもこのようでありたいと憧れるような存在で、この役を演じることに背筋が伸びる想いです。かつてこんなラブストーリーがあっただろうかと思うほどこの物語は多面体で、知的で社会的でもあります。人を愛するということの素晴らしさと切なさがほとばしっている物語。緊張もしますがクランクインが楽しみでなりません。

今作は珠玉のラブストーリーであると同時に、要の一つとして、主人公が奏でるクラシックギターの旋律があります。この音色という登場人物をどう映像化できるかが最大の課題だと思っています。主演の福山雅治さんはギタリストとしても最高峰の人。誰もが得意分野を演じると思われるでしょうが、今回、彼が手にするクラシックギターはエレキやアコギとは全くの異種。常に高みを目指す福山さんらしいチャレンジングな作品になるでしょう。そして、ヒロインにはこれ以上ない適役の石田ゆり子さん。初共演の二人がどんなハーモニーを奏でるのか。まるで指揮者のような想いで今から心躍らせています。

僕の小説は映画化が難しく、これまで実現したことがなかったので、とても楽しみにしています。この分断と対立の時代に、様々な愛が交錯する美しい物語を通じて、見る人が精神的な高揚感を得られるような映画になることを期待しています。福山雅治さん、石田ゆり子さんが、原作を気に入って下さっていることを耳にし、喜んでいましたが、まさか、お二人が蒔野聡史と小峰洋子を演じて下さるとは！映画の完成を首を長くして待っています。
